Urban Flower Farm Apprenticeship, West Philadelphia

Lunaria Gardens, an urban flower farm and design studio, is offering an apprenticeship opportunity July - November 2026. This internship will be based primarily at our headquarters Pentridge Station in West Philly, but may also include occasional site visits to other Philadelphia gardens and area events.

Position type: Part-time apprenticeship
Hours/ schedule: About 10 hours per week - less during summer, more during Sept-Oct wedding season. We do most harvesting mornings Tuesdays-Thursdays. Early morning availability required in summer.
Compensation: Stipend of $15/ hr. When available, we provide extra cut flowers, seeds, plants.

Position Description:
The apprenticeship program is designed to be a hands-on, worktrade equivalent of a course in regenerative urban flower farming. Past alumni have gone on to work as farm managers, event floral designers, and native landscape stewards.
Apprentices can expect training, collaboration, then management of some of the following tasks:

▪ Planting: seeds, plugs, perennials

▪ Field work: watering, weeding, mulching, bed prep, compost management

▪ Floral order fulfillment: Receiving florist orders, planning harvest schedule, cutting + counting stems, organizing orders for pickup.

▪ Inventory organization, construction

▪ Occasional assistance with event production + retail sales. (Note bouquet-making/ floral design is not a focus of this position.)

Requirements:

▪ Schedule availability of about 10 hours per week, July - November, 2026. Some morning availability between Tuesdays - Thursdays is required, as early as 6am in July and August. 

▪ A desire to learn about cut flower production, a solid work ethic, consistent time commitment, and positive attitude. 

▪ Experience gardening, farming, or landscaping for at least one growing season.

▪ Some familiarity with plant identification, especially with common Eastern Pennsylvania weeds.

▪ Attention to detail and commitment to seeing tasks through to completion

▪ Proactive communication skills: asking for clarification of assignment as needed, reporting progress, issues, and any upcoming considerations.

▪ Ability to work both independently, but also alongside others, including owner, interns/ volunteers, property staff, neighbors, and general public. 

▪ Ability to perform physical tasks in all weather conditions (such as humid heat and rain showers), and lift 50 pounds. Full color vision (lack of colorblindness) is required.

▪ Ability to comfortably follow verbal and written instructions in English and complete basic math (addition, subtraction, multiplication).

Lunaria Gardens, established 2011 by Kristen Jas Vietty, is an urban flower farm and design studio, with a base of operations at Pentridge Station in West Philadelphia. We primarily grow wholesale flowers for local florists, and occasionally offer retail + event florals, specialty plants, workshops, and community events. I’ve personally found a lot of value in my past internships with various organizations, and in recent years, have been committed to passing along some of the knowledge I’ve been fortunate to acquire.
